The child comes into contact with the many different forms of written language that surround us, and is encouraged to observe similarities and differences and to speculate about what they might write (e.g. posters, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, books, product or toy packaging, maps, letters, recipes, street or supermarket signs, etc.). Frequent contact with the written word will help the child to love reading and prepare him or her to become a future “good” reader. Gradually the child will understand the basic conventions of reading (e.g. that we read from left to right and top to bottom), but will also be able to identify and compare different types of texts.
